Came in for dinner around 9pm Monday night. Place was pretty dead, but no one took a drink order for nearly 20 minutes and then didn’t even apologize for the poor service. Ordered the linguine with seafood and red sauce. Generous portion of seafood but the pasta was limp and overcooked. I think based on my experience you would be out of your mind waiting more than 15 minutes to eat here. I didn’t wait at all and I don’t thinkI would come back.

Homey little seafood place! Not much seating so would recommend calling ahead for a reservation (only allowed for 3+ groups). We got oysters to start and then seafood pasta. All was delicious! Service was also great. The white sauce is sooo yummy but of course also very heavy. Tbh don’t plan on doing anything active after eating the pasta with creamy sauces.

We tried lunch on a weekday. No waiting at all. We tried half dozen oyster, seafood linguine and seafood risotto. I think risotto is the best.

The best and worth the wait

Neighborhood atmosphere with very eclectic decor. Noisy, cold and rustic, with delicious food. Crusty bread was good. The seafood risotto was slightly overcooked but seafood was fresh and plentiful. Stella on tap was refreshing. Prices are reasonable for San Francisco. Not as good as it once was, but better than others.

Crab soup to share was delicious! (There’s enough for two, in fact significant portions)Oysters as entries are good (even the west coast ones) - and clam chowder really good as well. Wait of 1:15 on a regular Saturday afternoon (at around 7:00)

Every menu we had was great. Loved their clam chowder, seafood risotto, and of course the cioppino. The only thing not satisfying was the seating. We made a reservation for five, and when we arrived there was a chair added on the edge of a table for four. It was too crowded but there seemed to be no bigger table.

love the food here! fresh and fast! We have been coming to this place every time we hit SF, just that parking can be hard over here.

I was on a fasting for a procedure and they made a nice broth for me!

This place is awesome! Good prices, large dishes and the employees are consistently friendly.

A bit disappointed based on the ratings, I was expecting something better overall, the salmon pasta was good but nothing crazy :/, the waitress also wasn't the best.. (might just be a bad day or something but definitely impacted the diner) I would not say I will not recommend but it's not as good as expected

As a seasoned food critic and seafood lover, I highly recommend Sotto Mare. I visited for their dinner service a couple weeks ago to be greeted by the husband and wife owners prior to being seated. Great personal touches paired with outstanding seafood. I could taste the freshness and flavors bursting in my mouth from their famous Cioppino. As a Boston-native, their Clam Chowder greatly exceeds my standards too. When I'm back in SF next time, I promise I'll be back!

If you planning to go to San francisco, you must go, hut they usually busy, and no parking spot I recommended take uber, lyft or walk. Risotto, pizza are good

Outstanding Cioppino and the White Clam Chowder is to die for. Great dinning experience and the servers, kitchen staff are all friendliness and un-jaded.. Make your SF experience complete. This is not a typical touristy restaurant. It offers great seafood and history without the presumption, or touristy concept.. It is that Niche restuarant where great food and service live....

Went to Sotto Mare and they were closed for Labor Day, but I came again the next day because I craved for risotto.I ordered shucked oysters from both East and West coast variety and they were so fresh! Shucked into perfection. And the cocktail sauce complemented the oysters so well I went for second serving. The risotto was also superb! With generous serving of calamari, prawns, and shellfishes. Truly a delight. While I am not a big fan of their version of clam linguine, but it's still enjoyable. All and all I'm glad I gave this place a try, will come back for sure for their gigantic-sized cioppino when I come around Bay area next time.

So good I forgot to take pictures before diving in. Lots of people here so come early or prepare to wait in line a bit.

This place NEVER lets me down. Delicious food. Great service. Valet parking. We ordered their special (Seafood stew and oyster combo) and it was so fresh and delicious. Plenty of food and at the end they serve either fried rice or noodles. We ate like Queens last night. If you haven't tried this place you MUST!!!

There few years ago the lady that owns it is so funny telling us she’s closing down it’s late as she saying that she’s pouring a glass of wine for me and my wife we ate the best sea food ever I’m from Canada I send all my friends that go to San Fran to this restaurant they come home and how you find this place incredible

My daughter and myself had been to Sotto Mare before a couple of years back. Made it one of our top favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Back in town and decided to go back for late lunch. One we arrived got greeted by the host who I never got her name, she was tall with short hair. Awfully rude!.We asked to be seated inside at one of the tables she decided to sit us at the bar.Asked her if we could sit outside instead, once we were outside, she looks at my daughter and raises her voice and asked her, "What table do you want"?I immediately said "THIS ONE "Pointing to one table. I noticed how she had raised her voice to my daughter and I did get upset. I'm hoping next time I don't get greeted by her.For the food is amazing. Thank youSotto Mare .

Very friendly waitresses and waiters. We got here and waited in line before they opened on a weekend. Conveniently located and everyone greeted us with a smile. Super amazing service. Portions weren't small and were very filling. A nice atmosphere, and great serving team our glasses were always filled, and our leftovers were boxed for us. We absolutely will return and we will recommend to all our friends.

The crab cioppino and the risotto with seafood were to die for! Good portion size and reasonable prices. Will definitely return next time I'm in the city.

Great Italian food. Had the cioppino and it was delicious. It is a large portion suitable for two people.

This was absolutely amazing. The seafood was one of a kind

I had the crab louie. It had a huge amount of fresh crab on lettuce. Not your normal louie, but very good. My husband had the scallops which were perfectly cooked.

I came to Sotto Mares a little over a year ago when I was visiting from out of town. I was only in town for a day or two and beside my concert that I had come for, Sottos was my next big destination for the famous cioppino bowl. Unfortunately by the time we had arrived the restaurant was sufficiently busy and it was clear that although we had arrived before the restaurant technically closed it was likely they were not going to seat us. That was unfortunately the case and I left San Francisco without my zuppa. However I recently returned and finally got my hands on some cioppino. It was very good, and the seafood portion was decent. I got crab, shrimp, bay scallops, calamari, mussels, and clams. I wish the scallops weren't bay scallops but hey. I'm glad I made it this time!

I must be ordering the wrong dishes. I've been here twice, tried the ciopinno which was good but not mind blowing. Also ordered the sand dabs, I think our cook must have forgotten to season them, they were so bland, we added quite a bit of salt. Overall, not worth the long wait imo.

Small, intimate and inviting restaurant with friendly staff. The food are super good. Can’t get enough of their crab cioppino.
Richard Kober
This is a must stop every time I'm in San Francisco. The Cioppino is hands down my favorite version of the dish. The service is fast, friendly and attentive. The open kitchen, and dining room length bar is really cooland the aromas of garlic, tomatoes and wine fill the room.
Steve Badger
Cool place. The food was good, but not great. The service was fabulous and the ambience unique and cool.

Very fresh seafood. We loved everything that we ordered. You definitely need to try it!

I visit this place a lot since I work close by. I like how their customer service is always excellent and they keep the spot well organized all the time. Rates are reasonable and they serve sizeable portions.

Great food. Tried the risotto, oysters and clam chowder. My only ask would be if their designated server looked in our direction once in a while. Took 10 minutes between being given a seat and having our orders taken.
Ben Park
Amazing food. Both the chowder and the other seafood dishes were amazing. I highly recommend. They don't have chowder in a bread bowl, but they have some better. They just give you delicious bread on the side.

40 min wait on a Friday night. Went to the bar next door to have a drink during the wait. Food was excellent. Oysters at 1.50 a piece was a deal! Bar seat gave us a view of the kitchen and I must say this staff is one of the hardest working efficient staff I’ve seen.

This place is great. Parking is tough to find, but not impossible. I went to a late lunch at 3pm and the place was semi- empty. The seafood risotto was fantastic. It had every bit of seafood in it: clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari and more. The risotto perfectly cooked. I also had the blue cheese wedge which was good, but nothing special. It needed bacon and a bit of balsamic vinaigrette drizzle. It just needed a punch. I've heard the Cioppino is to die for, but it's for two. So come hungry or bring a buddy. They serve you bread and water. And the service was very good. The bar tops were granite or something similar. Very clean and very nice decor. Will be back!
